"The river flows just there under the first bridge. After a kilometer in the woods observing the tracks of wildlife, we meet with it again as we hike a wooden footbridge. Let's have a stop. And let's look at the backdrop of the boreal forest aligned with the rapids. The colors of the rising or setting sun are often sublime. One more kilometer and we could head straight to a small hut to share a snack around the fireplace, but I want to show you that river again from the top of a hidden cliff. Could it be as sacred as the one near the stairs leading to the hut? Another kilometer to cover, then let's listen one more time to the melodies of Äkäsjoki. Wait! I may take you further upstream where some old barns, granaries, and watermill recall the ancient times of that river located on the edge of Yllästunturi National Park."

Expect a 250 m elevation gain. There is one dry toilet and shelter available on the itinerary.

THE CONQUEST OF KERÄSKERO

"Let's take this path once walked by Montelli and the inhabitants of the village in the valley! At first, it is a path in a small gorge among the large fir and black spruce trees of the boreal forest. Then, it is a path of mountain birches which resist the harshest climate. The small cabin built in 1945 guards the last slopes to the summit. We'll come back to it later today. But before that, we want to reach one of those Arctic mountains full of views in all directions of the compass rose. I'm in love with so many but if I had to choose then I answered this one that I've called "Oxygen". Read about it. It takes you to the top of an unique fell where you can breathe the purest air in the world and where you can let yourself be amazed by the panoramic view of the whole mountains of Pallas National Park. Indeed that hike cannot be a round trip rush to the summit forgetting to enjoy the wide-angle views of the lakes on both sides of the mountain, the immense taiga that stretches to the Swedish border, and the long range of Pallas fells. Likewise, a sauna experience cannot be a schedule to obey. We will take time to discover the different Lappish atmospheres filling the several sauna rooms, and of course to take a few dips in the icy water in the refreshing waters of the lake."
